Choosing your deployment approach

The Rights Management Server (RMS) and the storage components of the Secure Shared Files feature can be deployed in the same or in a different location. The following describes the supported deployment configurations:

Deployment
Description
Implementation actions
Cloud storage and cloud RMS Both storage and RMS are in the cloud.

There are no installation procedures that you need to perform.  You only need to configure your file storage to use the cloud RMS.

On-premise storage and cloud RMS The storage location is within your network while the RMS is in the cloud. If you already host Syncplicity file storage in your data center, you may need to upgrade your Syncplicity Storage Connector software. Contact your Syncplicity Support team. Otherwise, you need only to configure your file storage to use the cloud RMS.
On-premise storage and RMS Both storage and RMS are on-premise.  You need to install the RMS in your environment.
Cloud and on-premise storage with one RMS in the cloud Only one RMS is in the cloud for cloud and on-premise. If you already host Syncplicity file storage in your data  center, you may need to upgrade your Syncplicity Storage Connector software. Contact your Syncplicity Support team. Otherwise, you only need to configure your file storage to use the cloud.

Two deployments:

  1. Cloud storage and cloud RMS
  2. On-premise storage and cloud RMS

The cloud storage accesses only the cloud RMS and the on-premise storage accesses only the on-premise RMS. A cloud StorageVault cannot connect to an on-premise RMS Server.

You need to configure your file storage to use the cloud RMS.

If you already host Syncplicity file storage in your data center, you may need to upgrade your Syncplicity Storage Connector software. Contact your Syncplicity Support team. Otherwise, you need only to configure your on file storage to use the cloud RMS.

If you choose to have an on-premise storage deployment in any of the above scenarios, review the following:

  • The Secure Shared Files feature may be enabled on a per-StorageVault basis; for example, you may configure one StorageVault to use the Secure Shared Files feature and another StorageVault to not use the Secure Shared Files feature.
  • Each StorageVault connects to one and only one RMS. Conversely, one RMS Server may support multiple StorageVaults.

NOTE: To configure your on-premise or cloud file storage to use a cloud RMS, you do not need to read the Installation Overview article.

When done, see Enabling Secure Shared Files for your account.
