Learn about Syncplicity Panorama Connector

Syncplicity Panorama provides secure mobile access to existing content on Network Shares, Home Directories and SharePoint sites. For network shares and home directories, the content can be stored in 3rd party solution that supports the Server Message Block (SMB) or Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol. The Connector can be configured for network share and home directory access, SharePoint access, or both. The Connector itself acts as an intermediary to users on the public Internet to allow secure access without requiring the user to be connected to a VPN. The Connector has an administrator console with a set of security policies that determine how content can be accessed in SharePoint sites or network shares. Administrators can create bookmarks, which are UNC paths to specified directories in the network shares or the URLs to a SharePoint sites. The administrator can assign a descriptive name to the bookmark. The mobile users with access to that location see the bookmark name when they log in. Clicking the bookmark name opens the configured location, where they can then access their files. The Connector provides an offline mode, which allows users to create content even when they are not connected to the network share or SharePoint site, and then upload and synchronize later when connected. Users can also mark files and folders as favorites, which caches them locally on their mobile device so that they can quickly access them even when offline.

SharePoint Access

When configured for SharePoint access, the Connector allows Syncplicity users to access documents in Microsoft SharePoint Document Libraries. However, users can access only those files that they would be able to access directly through SharePoint.

Users can perform actions such as browse, upload, download, delete, rename, and check in and check out from their mobile devices. To access SharePoint, the Connector requires the Enterprise Edition and is controlled through Syncplicity policies. Actions performed by users through the Connector are audited and logged.

Network share and home directory access

When configured for network share access, the Connector allows Syncplicity users to access documents in your network share access using the Syncplicity app. Users can navigate through the shares, and perform various actions on files, such as edit, rename, copy and delete, if their permissions allow. However, users can access only those files that they would be able to access directly on the network share.

You can use your Syncplicity policies to further control access to content, and monitor actions performed by users through the Connector.

The Connector can be configured to search Active Directory to discover each user’s home directory on the network share. If this policy is enabled, users automatically have a bookmark for their home directory with an administrator specified default name, such as “Home Directory.” If a Home Directory is not associated with the user’s account in Active Directory, an error message is displayed to the user stating that the user does not have a home directory defined.

Administrator console

The Connector has an administrative interface that you can use to perform various management tasks, including the following:

  • Add, edit, or remove connections from the Connector to desired SharePoint sites or network shares.
  • Enable or disable the home directory, which allows the Connector to automatically retrieve the user’s associated network share home directory in Active Directory.
  • Allow or deny access to SharePoint sites or network shares to individual users or groups of users.

Some of the same policy settings appear in both the Connector’s administrator policy sets and in the Syncplicity account policy sets.  In case of a conflict, the Syncplicity policy set has the higher priority.
